The Fashion Law Project at Loyola Law School, Los Angeles will host the symposium, “One Channel Does Not Fit All: The Fashion Law Implications of Omnichannel Marketing,” on Saturday, March 22, 2014 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. PDT on Loyola’s downtown LA campus. The symposium will examine the unique issues posed by emerging technology and trends in the fashion industry in the areas of privacy, advertising, social responsibility and more. The panels will include “Legal Obligations of Being Omniscient,” “Legality of Influence” and “Legally Good: How to be Socially Responsible and Why It’s the ‘Right Thing to Do’ for Fashion Brands,” which will be webcast live. “The scope and reach of the fashion industry is constantly expanding. This conference is designed to help fashion lawyers, designers and executives capitalize on that growth in a legal and ethical way,” said alumna Staci Jennifer Riordan, executive director of The Fashion Law Project and partner and chair of the Fashion Law Practice Group at Fox Rothschild LLP.
The conference will start with opening remarks by Sean M. Scott, senior associate dean for academic affairs at Loyola Law School; Vanthi Pham ’14, student chair, The Fashion Law Project; at Loyola and Glyn Milburn, business team member, Los Angeles Mayor’s Office for Economic Development. The session, “Legally Framed: An Overview of the Laws Affecting Multichannel Marketing,” will feature Deborah Greaves, adjunct professor at Loyola and former general counsel of True Religion Brand, providing an outline of the day’s topics.
“Legal Obligations of Being Omniscient” will assess best practices for dealing with private consumer information as its collection and use expands. The speakers will be Danielle Lowy, corporate counsel, JustFab; Macala Wright, digital consultant, Why This Way; Elton Graham, vice president of e-commerce, Kellwood Company; and Jeffrey Kobulnick, partner, Ezra Brutzkus Gubner LLP. Riordan will moderate the panel.
“Legality of Influence,” will consider the role of social media in fashion advertising and the use of disclosures in an area where the line between editorial and advertising content can easily be blurred. The speakers will be Candice Hyon, corporate counsel of marketing, privacy and intellectual property, Forever 21; Lauren Indvik, co-editor in chief, Fashionsta.com; Stacy Procter, staff attorney, Federal Trade Commission; and Rey Kim, general counsel and senior vice president, legal and business development, HALSTON. The panel will be moderated by Oren Bitan, associate, Buchalter Nemer.
“Legally Good: How to be Socially Responsible and Why It’s the ‘Right Thing to Do’ for Fashion Brands” will consider the rise of social awareness in the production and marketing of fashion. It will address how companies should position themselves to cover both their legal and ethical obligations in such areas as production standards, labeling and government oversight. The speakers will be Bruce Berton, CEO of B&B International and professor at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM); Bobby Hines, international trade specialist, U.S. Department of Commerce; Rick Horwitch, vice president, strategy and solutions business development, Bureau Veritas; and Dustin Huffine, production development & sourcing consultant and former general counsel, Joe's Jeans. The session will be webcast live.
The lunch will feature a “Fireside Chat.” Crosby Noricks, fashion marketing strategist and founder of PR Couture, will be interviewed by Bernard Campbell, co-founder of the fashion conference series Fi3. Topics up for discussion include branding and public relations techniques to help distinguish a label. The day will end with a reception.
